Clothes Dryer Boosting
Some laundry rooms are centrally located in a home creating a long or complex duct system which increases clothes dryer cycle times, decreases efficiency, and most importantly poses a potential safety hazard. Clothes dryers operate most effectively when the exhaust air is moving at 1,200 to 2,200 feet per minute (FPM), keeping the lint moving quickly and safely through the duct and exiting out the wall or roof cap. Clothes dryers are designed to perform in low static pressure systems where the duct length is no more than 35 feet long, per the International Mechanical Code (IMC), Section 504. This ensures the exhaust air speed stays in the optimum range noted above and keeps lint from accumulating in the duct. When the air speed drops below 1,200 FPM, wet lint begins to accumulate, increasing the static pressure, decreasing the airflow and snowballing into a hazardous condition. This is dangerous because the heat produced by the clothes dryer needs to be exhausted to ensure the temperatures stay in a safe range.
